What up 2011? For the first installment of the year, it’s mostly new stuff, including some dope new artists and projects you must be aware of this year. I’ve added tunes from two names you should be familiar with if you’ve listened to my mixes from last year: Jamie Woon and James Blake. Somewhere in the middle, there’s a triplet featuring Glasgow artist Koreless, presenting a short history of his public work, including a phenomenal remix of Jacques Green’s “The Look” (also, look out for Jacques Green). There’s another triplet showcasing some Detroit’s finest emcees: Magestik Legend, Guilty Simpson, Marv Won, Nametag, and Danny Brown. Elsewhere, be on the lookout for Gang Colors, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Arp 101. I had to include Jamie XX’s remix of “NY Is Killing Me,” because, like, damn. And to close things out, a smooth joint from Chicago’s The Primeridian into one from Knxwldge, the dope beatmaker from the Klipmode crew.

November’s mix starts slow and somber, but dig in after a few songs and I promise you the beat picks up.

It’s bookended with tunes by the supremely talented Brit, James Blake. He’s put out several singles/EP’s in 2010 that have evolved in sonic orientation from dubstep. Take “Limit To Your Love,” the first released track from his upcoming debut LP. It’s a haunting vocal/piano-led tune, but lo!, there’s some womp-womp wobble inside. This is a candidate for my favorite song of the year, no question. Lone’s “Once In A While” smells like classic Detroit-techno in the vein of some of the Underground Resistance catalog, so it’s only right to blend it right into a UR classic, “Timeline” by Galaxy 2 Galaxy.

Another star track of 2010: Rocketnumbernine’s “Matthew & Toby.” The group has been opening for Four Tet on tour this year and Kieren Hebden was so impressed with this track that he had to book some time for the group to record and produce “Matthew & Toby.” The result is simply awesome: an epic instrumental led by live drums, just the right sound mix, and tons of understated adrenaline.
